Auschwitz smoke

I wrote this when I was in school;

The hope is gone, along with the smoke rising from the chimneys all over Auschwitz
I open my eyes and see what once used to be the worst place on earth
The memories are stuck
Flashbacks every day
I've been trying to forget what I what once saw, heard, smelled and felt
I tried to supplant my memories, but suddenly it all came clear
The past cannot be overcome
It is the past that makes us who we are
Today we have freedom
I no longer bear the star on my arm
I bear it in my heart
Proud to be who I am, I walk through Auschwitz
I turn around and think to myself: I survived!
