Hello, everyone! Some of you know me; some of you don't. So, I thought it might be a good idea to post a thread even though I've been here since November.

Well, my name is Marisa. I'm 16. I'm in my high school's all-girl showchoir. For those that have no idea what showchoir is, this is a video of our group at a competition in February. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GHZg2WZgaP8 (If you pause at 0:40 and look to the right. That's me. :D)

I've been singing since before I can remember. I've been in different choirs since 5th grade. I used to be in the independent music industry when I was 12, but complications arose so I don't do it anymore.

One of my hobbies is writing poetry (which can be viewed in the Lit Arts section.) Sometimes I try writing songs, but I can only come up with lyrics. I've tried writing music, but usually it's a tune I've heard before.

A random fact about me is that I'm a Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia survivor. (I bet most of you are now going, "What on earth is that?") Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia (CDH) is a birth defect that occurs in 1 out of 2,500 children. 50% or so of all diagnosed won't live. What happens is the child is born with a hole in their diaphragm. The intestine then goes through the opening and all of those organs push up against one or both lungs. Most of the time, it's on the left and sometimes the intestine wraps around the lung. (Which is what mine did.)
Survivors sometimes have complications such as asthma afterwards. Another complication that can happen is that scar tissue can block your intestine. Therefore, they have to go in and take out that section. To make a long story short, I've got two different sized lungs, a portion of my intestines is missing, and I have some pretty ugly looking scars. If you'd like to learn more about CDH visit www.cdhawareness.org
(Once you're there click CDH.)

If you'd ever like to chat, just PM me or talk to me on irc. (I'm usually in there.)

Yeah, lol, that's me. :)
As far as the CDH, I'm not surprised you didn't know. It's not a well known birth defect. Which is why I try to do my best to inform people so that way one day, a cause might be found and more kids might have the potential to survive. :)

-_-...yep, you found it. :p I wrote that parody, tried to sing it. Eh...wasn't that great. (I had to switch octaves 'cause part of it was a little low for me.) The other one is better.

I was born with mine. Had the surgery two days later so luckily I don't remember it. It's really ok though. I just have some sick scars but I don't notice the "lack of lung or intestine." I've lived with it my entire life so I don't know the difference. The only thing that affects me now is that I get "lung cramps." I don't know what causes them, but eventually I'll see a doctor and find out. I'm just trying to spread the awareness for it. I mean, if I can walk through life being basically normal despite the condition, other kids should be able to also. There aren't very many survivors (especially not my age) but we all want to make people aware. :) (I sound kind of crazy don't I?)

You're a talented singer, and i greatly admire the fact that you want to spread the awareness of congenital diaphragmatic hernia's, hopefully your word will spread, maybe you should design and make a website doing so, id gladly help design and program it with you, just an idea. You could post what you've been through like a blog except has infomation on aswell.

P.S - Get back to me about it if you do.

Well, there's already the organization Breath of Hope. It's a charity/awareness group made up of parents of survivors (plus two survivors. :D). They've basically got it covered. There are tons and tons of blogs out there about it too. It's just not a well-known condition because so many children die so there are very few survivors. (Which decreases the hope of future parents so 1/4 of all those prenatally diagnosed are electively terminated.) Thanks for the offer, but I don't think it's necessary considering there are so many others.
