Hip hop is a music genre and cultural movement which developed in New York City during the 1970s primarily among African Americans and Latin Americans.[1] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hip_hop#cite_note-0)[2] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hip_hop#cite_note-1) Hip Hop's four main elements are Mc'ing (often called rapping (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rapping)), DJing (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disk_jockey), graffiti writing (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Graffiti#Graffiti_as_an_element_of_hip_hop), and breakdance (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Breakdance). Other elements include beatboxing (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beatboxing), hip hop fashion (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hip_hop_fashion), and slang (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slang). Since first emerging in the Bronx (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bronx) and Harlem (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harlem), the lifestyle of hip hop culture has spread around the world.[3] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hip_hop#cite_note-2)
When hip hop music (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hip_hop_music) began to emerge, it was based around DJs who created rhythmic beats by looping breaks (smalls portions of songs emphasizing a percussive pattern) on two turntables. This was later accompanied by "rapping" (a rhythmic style of chanting). An original form of dancing, and particular styles of dress, arose among followers of this new music. These elements experienced considerable refinement and development over the course of the history of the culture.
Rapping (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rapping), also known as Emceeing, MCing, Rhyme spitting, Spitting, or just Rhyming, is the rhythmic (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rhythm) delivery of rhymes (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rhyme), one of the central elements of hip hop music (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hip_hop_music) and culture (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hip_hop_culture). Although the word rap has sometimes been claimed to be a backronym (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Backronym) of the phrase "Rhythmic American Poetry", "Rhythm and Poetry", "Rhythmically Applied Poetry", or "Rhythmically Associated Poetry", use of the word to describe quick and slangy speech or repartee long predates the musical form.[35] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hip_hop#cite_note-34) Rapping can be delivered over a beat (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beats_%28music%29) or without accompaniment.
