Can you use ps2 games on the ps3?

My friend say's his friend has one and it wont let him play ps2 games on the ps3.

Does it matter on which ps3 you get, because there are different models out for the ps3.

And if it does matter on which model, which model should i get that i can play ps2 games on?

Yes for a certain model it does.

If I heard correct the 40g can not play PS2 games but 80g+ can.
