Media Literacy Course - What cha think?
This is a 'Presentation' Kim and I have to do for our Media Literacy Course.
I wanted to show you all my 'media Log' and get feedback(Answering question within our textbook) but I kinda...erm...deleted it!(I only got a printed copy!)
Here is our presentation tomorrow; Feedback please.
Quote:
In our presentation we will discuss the way advertisers market to their target audience.
As you can see on page 28 the article shows an image of a group of though people. They are all wearing ‘Starter’ clothing. On this advertisement it says in large appealing font ‘It’s about team’, which is in-place to distract you from the fact that the advertisement has nothing to do with team and they just want to portray an image to you as a consumer find appealing. The more a consumer likes an advertisement and thinks that that item is interesting the more likely they are too buy it.
Think about it for a moment. Why do we mostly wear brand name clothing? It’s most certainly not because of the price. Most brand name clothing is highly expensive (Upwards from 60$). We buy it because the marketers for that brand shows us advertisements and use different portrayed images to allow us to ‘connect’ with the object, lifestyle, activity, or person depicted within the advertisement.
Let’s take a look at our school alone. Many different groups co-exist within our school community.
The following our some of those groups;
Jocks
Emos
Nerds
Druggies
Trouble Makers/Bullies
And of course the list could go on and on if you really wanted to break it all down.
Each of these different groups portrays a different image. Through clothing, actions, lifestyles, speech, and even down to the music they share in common. That is the main idea. These groups share a common interest. We tend to believe that this is the reason different groups have formed over time within society itself and our school.
These groups may offer you many different things. Friendship, Acceptance, Common Knowledge, and many different things. Which is just another reason we end up forming groups. We outcast those whom we don’t like and placed them into another group while remaining in our own.
A good example of this would be the classical stereotypical “Trouble Maker makes fun of or beats up a ‘Nerd’”.
This is how our groups are different from each other. I think we have done a good job during our presentation of showing this.
So to summarize everything we have talked about. The following are the reasons we form groups and how the marketers use this to sell their products…
Marketers;
- Portray an image that appeals to its audience creating different groups and separation between youth.
- Don’t always tell the truth or portray the truth to their target audience.
- Attempt to exploit the human condition of a desire to ‘Fit in’ and be ‘Cool’
Youth;
- Divide themselves up based on preferences of;
- Music, Clothing, Lifestyle, Actions, Common Interest and knowledge.
- Attempt to find something they like within these groups like;
- Friendship and Acceptance

EEEboy! Found my media log
Quote:
I believe that taste in music in today’s generation of youth has undergone such a massive and radical fragmentation in their musical tastes for a few reasons.
1) Youth today have less respect for authority and their elders.
Youth today are not scared to rebel against authority or those older then them (Parents, Teachers, Principals, etc). This could be explained by many different reasons but I think it’s quite clear that today’s youth simply has not been built upon the morals and standards of their parents and grandparents.
2) Youth these days feel that they need to use music and technology to portray their individualism and establish a ‘group’ that they wish to be part of. An increase of pressure to the younger “Pre-Teens” and early “Teens” could explain why youth today can’t seem to build themselves around the morals and standards of their parents and grand parents. Although it is quite possible this is just a natural process of human change.
Do I believe that teens and youth are less united as a result? Yes and no.
I feel that Youth has become less united “As a whole” then we once were. For example…
30 somewhat odd years ago it was normal for people to gather in an actual locations (Rather then some online “Chat room” or “Game World”) and converse. At this point it didn’t matter if you were black, white, French, English, or whatever else could ‘Divide’ us (Actually I’m not sure if this is quite accurate based on the Civil Rights movement; Although I believe I have portrayed my point).
These days if you are black or white; you’re separated
French or English? Don’t expect to get along! (Unless you’ve got some kind of magical power that I don’t know about! Haha)
This shows the point that youth now separates themselves based on many, many different preferences. One of these being of course; Music.
On the other side of the coin youth “is more united, but yet still divided”. How is this possible?
Through the use of groups (“Cliques”) and stereotypes youth today is united within their “Groups” but divided from “Other Groups”.
