Actually, sub-brackets are used to denote an antecedent to a pronoun without a discernible antecedent. Kudos for mentioning it, though.

Correct: He not only studied Spanish but also German.
OR: He not only studied Spanish but he also studied German.

Or: Not only did he study Spanish, but also German.
